China-ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Public Health was launched


On April 25, 2023, the launch ceremony of China-ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Public Health was held in the Memorial Hall of the Centennial Memorial Lecture Hall of Peking University. Mr. Zhang Guangjun, Vice Minister of Science and Technology of China, Mr. Gong Qihuang, President of Peking University, H.E. Djauhari Oratmangun, Ambassador of Indonesia to China, and Ms. Noppale, Vice President of Mahirong University of Thailand, attended and delivered speeches. Qiao Jie, executive vice President of Peking University and director of the Medical School, presided over the meeting.

Gong Qihuang pointed out that deepening scientific and technological exchanges and cooperation is an important way to pool global innovation resources and address common challenges of mankind. Since the outbreak of COVID-19, the need to strengthen international cooperation in public health and jointly build a human health community has become more urgent. In response to the initiative of Chinese leaders and to improve the health and well-being of the people in the region, Peking University is committed to promoting exchanges and cooperation in public health between Chinese universities and ASEAN partner universities, and jointly building a cooperation platform for scientific and technological innovation and personnel training. Peking University has a solid and extensive cooperation foundation in medicine with ASEAN countries, and the Medical School of Peking University has established cooperative relations with many major medical schools in ASEAN. In order to continue to consolidate the foundation of cooperation and promote the cooperation of science and technology in public health, with the support of the Ministry of Science and Technology of China and other ministries and commissions, Peking University, together with its domestic and ASEAN partners, initiated the establishment of the China-ASEAN Center for Science and Technology Cooperation in Public Health. The Center will be committed to building a long-term, pragmatic and effective cooperation mechanism, and make contributions to the implementation of the global development initiative and the building of a community with a shared future for mankind.

Zhang Guangjun expressed his warm congratulations on the establishment of the China-ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation  Center for Public Health.He pointed out that China and ASEAN are geographically interdependent, culturally interconnected and share a common destiny. Since the establishment of dialogue relations more than 30 years ago, China and ASEAN have found a way of unity and win-win cooperation, and have built an increasingly close community of shared future.The Ministry of Science and Technology of China proposed at the 11th meeting of the China-ASEAN Joint Commission on Science and Technology Innovation in June 2022 to support Peking University to lead and join many domestic institutions to jointly build a public health science and technology cooperation platform for ASEAN.He expressed ardent expectations for the development of the Center, hoping that the Center will accelerate the formation of a cooperation network covering ASEAN countries, become a broad stage for the interaction of talents in the public health field between China and ASEAN, and play a greater role in safeguarding regional public health security.

H.E. Djauhari Oratmangun shared the outstanding achievements of ASEAN and Indonesia's cooperation with China in recent years, and said that Indonesia will work with other ASEAN countries to help China and ASEAN promote public health science and technology cooperation, and promote the building of a higher level of China-ASEAN strategic partnership.

Nopparit said that Mahidol University has a long-term friendly and cooperative relationship with Peking University. The China-ASEAN University Medical Alliance led by Peking University provides an important platform for China and ASEAN major medical universities to continue to strengthen public health science and technology cooperation. As the ASEAN side president unit and permanent secretariat unit of the Alliance, Mahidol University will work with Peking University to play an important role in deepening China-ASEAN public health science and technology cooperation.

Zhan Siyan, dean of Peking University School of Public Health, made a report on the construction of China-ASEAN Science and Technology Cooperation Center for Public Health, and comprehensively introduced the center's goals, work content, organizational structure, management and operation mechanism, and partner development mechanism.

Leaders from the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Education, the National Health Commission, the National Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the Department of Science and Technology of Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region and other ministries and local government departments, as well as representatives from the embassies of Thailand, Malaysia, Vietnam, Brunei, Laos and the China-ASEAN Center and other embassies and international organizations, leaders and experts from the Chinese Center for Disease Control and Prevention, more than 20 universities at home and abroad, and leaders and representatives from the relevant departments and departments of Peking University attended the launch ceremony.
